Interactive News Show - iNews

Objectives

Conception and prototypical realisation of an interactive news broadcast format using MPEG-4 technology. Concepts based on conventional television, the internet, and on DVB/MHP will be combined in this newscast application. It may be used with a set-top box enhanced television set or on a personal computer.
 

Application features

  • News items may be selected manually or according to user preferences (by means of user or editorial priorities)
  • News are presented by a news speaker or news clips, controllable via interactive menus and the following elements:
    • A sign language interpreter may be faded in
    • Background information (maps, news history) related to news items can be accessed
    • An individualized interactive ticker (breaking news, stock prices, weather, subtitles)
    • Interactive Voting
  • Access to news archives
  • A customisable 3D user interface
  • Scenarios for news creation and distribution:
    • News delivered by a single network
    • News delivered by multiple, cooperating networks
  • Detailed tracking of watched  programs for audience rating and billing purposes

Current Status and Ongoing Tasks:

  • A flash demo showing iNews features will be downloadable at www.iavas.de/iNews
  • News networks are being contacted for the acquisition of video material (multilingual news speakers, sign language, news clips)
  • Compiling both technical and content related requirements relevant for the iNews format
  • Research on required software and MPEG-4 systems tools (BIFS, MPEG-J)
  • Comparison of currently available MPEG-4 players/browsers
