Interactive AudioVisual Application Systems

Welcome

Multimedia is one of the keywords that stands for the rapidly increasing development of new media technologies, including production and de livery of high quality audio and video content for entertainment, news, education, sports, games etc.

With current technologies (DVD, HDTV...) a very high quality can be achieved. However, the user is still forced to consume what he is presented with, without the possibility of interaction (except choosing from a number of channels).

Recently new standards have been introduced that allow for real interaction by the user (e.g. the object-based standard MPEG-4).

Nevertheless, any multimedia application available up to now utilises the new properties only to a certain extent. They especially neglect the fact that a total adaptation of a standard like MPEG-4, including the possibilities of interac tion, provides completely new dimensions of media delivery and consumption.

Our task is to develop an interactive example application, considering all aspects from authoring to consumer handling, especially paying attention to intera ctivity in order to reveal the possibilities as well as the boundaries of up-to-date delivery standards.

The initial iavas project has been successfully ended in September 2004. Some of the work done in the context of the iavas project will be continued at the TU Ilmenau within the scope of an EU network of excellence and at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau.
